Why We Almost Built Something Nobody Wanted
Early 2023. We were convinced.
Freelancers needed better client management. They were losing money, missing deadlines, and hating their admin work.
We'd talked to 15 freelancers. They'd all complained. They'd all said "yes, I need this."
We were ready to build.
Then a mentor asked: "Have you tried solving this yourself? Manually?"
We hadn't.
The 4-Week Validation Process
Instead of building, we did this:
Week 1: Manual Testing
We became our own customer.
We tracked every client interaction in a spreadsheet. Every invoice. Every deadline. Every missed payment.
We learned:
- The problem was real (we were losing money too)
- Current solutions were too complex for solo freelancers
- What "minimum" actually meant for this market
Week 2: Paid Testing
We paid 5 freelancers to let us shadow them for a day.
We watched. We didn't help. We didn't guide.
We learned:
- What they actually did (not what they said they did)
- Where they spent time (hint: not where we expected)
- What they'd tried before (and why it failed)
Week 3: Pre-Selling
We built a landing page. Not a prototype. Just a page describing what we'd build.
We drove $200 in traffic. 12 people signed up for early access.
We asked: "Would you pay $30/month for this?"
6 said yes. 6 said maybe. 0 said no.
But only 2 actually entered credit cards.
Lesson: "Would you pay?" means nothing. Pre-orders are everything.
Week 4: Decision
We had data:
- Real problem (we experienced it)
- Real users (we'd met them)
- Real interest (12 signups)
- Real commitment (2 pre-orders)
We decided: Not ready.
The pre-order rate (2/12 = 17%) was below our threshold. And the 6 "maybes" said they'd need "a few more features."
We knew we'd build the wrong thing.
We didn't build it.
What We'd Do Differently
Start With Pain, Not Solution
We started with "client management tool."
Better: "What makes you lose money with clients?"
Talk to Users Who Are Already Paying
We talked to everyone. The best insights came from people already paying for something similar (even if unhappy).
Pre-Sell Before Landing Page
We should have done a simple Typeform: "Would you pay $X for Y? Enter card to reserve."
Faster. Cheaper. More accurate.
The Validation Checklist We Use Now
For every project, we answer:
- Have we experienced this problem?
- Have we manually tried solving it?
- Have we shadowed real users?
- Have we pre-sold to 10+ people?
- Did credit cards actually exchange hands?
If any answer is no, we keep validating.
The Honest Take
Validation isn't glamorous. It's not "strategic planning" or "market analysis."
It's talking to people. Watching people. Paying people.
And most importantly: accepting when the data says "don't build."
We validate for 4-8 weeks before every project. Some clients think this is wasting time.
They don't build features nobody uses.
